Motorway Network Overview

Austria's toll road network (operated by ASFINAG) covers approximately 2,200 km of motorways and expressways. All vehicles up to 3.5t must have a valid vignette on these roads.

Roads Requiring a Vignette

  • All Autobahnen (A-roads): A1, A2, A4, A7, A8, A9, A10, A12, A13, A14, A21, A22, A23, and others
  • All Schnellstrassen (S-roads): S1, S2, S3, S5, S6, S10, S11, S31, S33, S35, S37, and others
  • Any road signed with the green motorway symbol

Roads NOT Requiring a Vignette

  • Federal roads (Bundesstrassen, B-roads)
  • State and regional roads
  • Urban streets and city roads
  • Grossglockner High Alpine Road (separate toll)
  • Silvretta High Alpine Road (separate toll)

Border Entry Points

Vignette compliance is checked by automated cameras at border crossings and throughout the network. Purchase before entering Austria. Not all border crossings have on-site sales points.

Enforcement

Cameras read plates and cross-reference the ASFINAG database in real time. On-the-spot fines: from €120. Administrative fines: up to €3,000. No grace period applies.
